Here's Swampy

Last week my Twitter friend Ryan Russell suggested I draw Swamp Thing. I've never drawn him before so I figured it'd be a fun challenge. Of course I had to add a little humor into the composition, haha.

The actual ink drawing is on 11x17 inch bristol board, if anyone is interested in purchasing the original artwork. It's in straight black & white, of course. The colors were done digitally.

The Goon That Laid the Golden Egg

"The Goon," created by Eric Powell, has been one of my favorite comics for a long time now. Great humor and a nice variety of art styles, The Goon never fails to entertain.

So, I figured it was time to do some fan art. Here's our lovable roughneck leading a horde of demonic chickens into a clobberin' fest. And yes, he is wearing a giant chicken costume. TO BLEND IN.

Hahaha.

Burt & Emmy's Muppet Adventures

This mini-comic is loosely based on true dream-events, as revealed by the wonderfully entertaining Emmy Cicierega. I couldn't pass up a PRIME #GrintFace joke opportunity.

For those of you left scratching your head: It's fun to use Rupert Grint's face as a punchline.

Ron Keeps The Beat

Here's a silly little Harry Potter comic featuring Harry, Ron, Hermoine and Animal (via The Muppets) as a Dementor. Originally, I had Ron yelling "OH GOD MY SPINE," but I opted for more sound effects, hahaha. Oh, those drumentors!

TurduckInvincible

At Wizard World Austin 2010, I picked up the two large hardcover volumes of Invincible, an ongoing Image comic created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. I tore through those two volumes; it is pretty darned awesome.

Invincible, or Mark Grayson, has had to tackle a number of eccentric villains during the course of the series. So I figured it'd be perfectly natural for him to save the holidays from a giant, deranged mutant turducken. Right?

I thought it'd be a nice illustration on which to end 2010. Happy New Year, everyone!

Namby Potter

Here is Snape teaching his Defense Against the Dork Arts class about the annoying "Namby Pamby."

I was inspired by Emmy to do my own mini-potter comic. Hopefully I'll do more! (I already have an idea for another one. It even has a JINGLE in it.)

I've typed it before and I'll type it again: Snape is by far my favorite HP character. Followed by Hermoine, the only student who could actually do any spells above a third-year level.

Cher Gambit

After years of hearing people butcher the Cajun-French word "cher," amongst other expressions and phrases, Gambit finally snaps. Actually, the biggest offender is Gambit himself, circa the X-Men cartoon. Oh, "mon CHER," it'll be alright.

Actually, it's pretty entertaining to hear "Cajun" voice acting on television. Trust me, you don't really want genuine cajunspeak on there. But, since Gambit was one charming "Cajun" mutant, I'm perfectly fine with his vaguely-kinda-frenchish-drawl. It's much easier on the ears than hearing something like "Mais, dat mutin' dere is trowin' dem playin' cards fass fass, ya cher!"

BURST!

EEEK! Sorry for the lack of posts. Been working on a lot of freelance illustrations. Wooo! OK, so this is a new shirt design that I just submitted to Threadless. Scoring is going on RIGHT AS I TYPE.

It's a fun speech bubble made out of comic onomatopoeias. Wouldn't this be totally fun to wear? WOULDN'T IT? You're right, it totallllly would.

Side Stitch - Designers at Heart

As you can probably tell, I put a lot of heart into this episode of Side Stitch. If you aren't familiar with the comic, it's something I make for when it's my turn to blog at the office (I work at BBR Creative, a design/ad agency in Lafayette, LA). I always try to instill some humor and cleverness in along with the design references, but this time I thought I'd try to make it pretty heartfelt.

As I mentioned on the BBR Blog, here we follow a young design pair from initial campus crush to the Request for Proposal (RFP), seeing all the adorableness and designer in-jokes in between.

I started concepting the story after I thought of the RFP/marriage kicker. I tried to think of a bunch of design-related situations in which to put the couple. The challenge wasn’t to try and squeeze in as much design references as possible (that was the easy part), but to illustrate two people falling in love in a very finite number of panels. So we see them working together to ace their design final, the initial inquiry to a first date, bonding over the industry’s beloved design annuals, starting their own design studio, painting a house, adopting their own pet and, finally, proposing marriage.

Hope you enjoyed it, and please pass this along to your design friends. They might get a kick out of it! :D

Brand ReVamping

Here's my new Side Stitch design comic. For those of you who aren't familiar, BBR Creative encourages its employees to take turns doing a blog on the BBR website. When my turn comes around, I draw a design-related comic and post it. And now, about the comic:

Had the Vampire Empire survived their initial brand meeting, they would have realized that it’s best for an agency to get to know a client before diving head first into the image-revamping process. This would have ensured that the designers knew that vampires and sunlight don’t really mix well. And if the logo didn’t immediately vaporize the Vampire Empire’s council, it would have eventually driven a stake into the club’s image.

Maybe the “online agency” was afraid of vampires. Or clowns. Or vampire clowns. Maybe they were werewolves! Or, maybe they were just trying to make a quick dollar. Don’t only do a job quickly — do it right. Though, I’d imagine trying to make the denizens of the night “more appealing” would be a daunting task. Perhaps some things are best left alone?

Notes about this comic:
I omitted a pun out of spacial necessity, but I thought I’d include it in this section: “No members means no revenue! We’ll have to get day jobs!”

I always have fun with the silly logos I do for these comics. The “existing” Vampire Empire logo was a “V” & “E” shaped to resemble vampire teeth. And the “revamped” logo features a rejoicing figure whose cape is forming a sun. Well, maybe he’s writhing.

I had a few Vampire Empire tagline options on the table. Here are some that were frontrunners:
“Eternity, for life.”
“Eternity now.”
“A brighter nightlife.”
“Live long and party.”

OH, and if anyone knows a decent comic lettering font, please let me know. I hand-drew all the lettering in Photoshop and it was quite a task.
