Brass Bed - Gramophone Shirt

My friends in Brass Bed asked me to come up with a shirt design! They wanted to have something for the release party of their second album, Melt White, which is coming up on Sept. 10th. That's going to be a super-fun show. Great music, too. Check 'em out!

I did a few thumbnails of different concepts based on the initial thoughts they gave me. They all lit on this direction, which was a horse pulling a giant gramophone; here's the final product. It was a really fun project to accept, and as an added bonus, I stocked up on a few ideas for future illustrations. Woooo!

BURST!

EEEK! Sorry for the lack of posts. Been working on a lot of freelance illustrations. Wooo! OK, so this is a new shirt design that I just submitted to Threadless. Scoring is going on RIGHT AS I TYPE.

It's a fun speech bubble made out of comic onomatopoeias. Wouldn't this be totally fun to wear? WOULDN'T IT? You're right, it totallllly would.

Name that Toon

One of my coworkers is in a chorus called "Sweet Adelines", who put on a performance every now and then. This year they are having a Broadway show-tunes theme, and I was asked to illustrate a cover for their program. A small, fun piece with a lot of creative freedom. This is the kind of freelance stuff that an illustrator just lovessssss.

Actually I'm sure freelance illustrators love all work. Since I usually just do things like this for fun, it's nice to actually get paid to draw silly things!

eNews is Good News

I was asked to whip up an illustration for one of BBR's HTML emails. The subject is about helping others realize how to effectively communicate eNews through html emails and blogs and stuff like that. I think. I actually wasn't given the article to read. I was just told to "do an illustration about eNews."

So, here you go! An envelope/keyboard. Yayyyy digital mail providing eNews, amirite?!?!

It's always fun to do illustration at work. :D

"Save the Gulf" Poster Prints

The photos above are of my Save the Gulf poster design that my friend Jude Landry was kind enough to offer to screen print. The posters will be on sale at The Great Oil Leak Poster Project gallery showings, coming up soon. I'll also be putting some up for sale online. Part of the proceeds will go towards Gulf Aid, to assist those whose lives and jobs were affected by the oil spill.

Doodie Patrol

I helped brand a pretend-militia club thingie! Sarah and her friends call lame guys "Doodies." It's an adorable take on a major problem in society. You know the type: Guys that walk around in overly graphic tees and popped collars and say "Bruh!" a lot. That are a bit too forward with the womenfolk. That love Jagerbombs. That basically exist to annoy non-doodies. They're typically "swole out" and "ready to hit it." You know.

But you may NOT know that there are other types of Doodies than just the Bruhs. Sleazy Rockers and Jackleg Yuppies also qualify. Amongst others. Just always be on the lookout for toolbags, amirite? Not really that hard to spot. Just look around!

So, to unite unDoodies under a common banner, I created this silly logo. I hope it helps Sarah, her friends and all women out there who are looking for strength in numbers! Clean up the streets!

PS - The female Doodie is known as a "Doodette."

Brainsketball

Here's another silly creation that was the result of our Wednesday night Lafayette Drink & Draw Social Club. There was no theme, but somehow a few of us ended up drawing classic monsters. Someone drew a werewolf and someone drew an emo Teen Wolf. I think someone else drew a big ol' squid. That's KIND OF a monster, right? Right. How can you tell if something is a monster? You wouldn't let it hold your baby.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't let a giant squid hold MY baby.

Music Tangents

Alright these are a couple of non-illustration videos, but don't be upset. It's still creative / artistic, right???

This first one is my first attempt at trying out my violin through a loop and acoustic amp. Pretty interesting.




This second one is me trying out a couple of new guitar pedals (POG2 octave and vintage Tube Screamer, along with a sweet Frantone fuzz pedal that I already had), with a funny ending.



Don't hate! I'm just making up stuff on the spot so it isn't exactly Mozart caliber, haha.

Glitterbots

My friend Sarah is obsessed with glitter. While it hasn't reached "intervention" levels yet, it's noteworthy enough to have necessitated an illustration. So this past Wednesday at Sketchgroup, I created her a robot butler, or robutler, that would scamper about collecting discarded glitter piles. Please note the "I'm excited!" girly hand position.

I will report back once a name has been issued upon this Glitterbot model. Stay tuned!

Side Stitch - Designers at Heart

As you can probably tell, I put a lot of heart into this episode of Side Stitch. If you aren't familiar with the comic, it's something I make for when it's my turn to blog at the office (I work at BBR Creative, a design/ad agency in Lafayette, LA). I always try to instill some humor and cleverness in along with the design references, but this time I thought I'd try to make it pretty heartfelt.

As I mentioned on the BBR Blog, here we follow a young design pair from initial campus crush to the Request for Proposal (RFP), seeing all the adorableness and designer in-jokes in between.

I started concepting the story after I thought of the RFP/marriage kicker. I tried to think of a bunch of design-related situations in which to put the couple. The challenge wasn’t to try and squeeze in as much design references as possible (that was the easy part), but to illustrate two people falling in love in a very finite number of panels. So we see them working together to ace their design final, the initial inquiry to a first date, bonding over the industry’s beloved design annuals, starting their own design studio, painting a house, adopting their own pet and, finally, proposing marriage.
