My friend Elizabeth Goodspeed puts together a biannual art magazine, Domestic Etch. I asked if I could submit an illustration this upcoming go-round, and she FOOLISHLY AGREED, mwuhahahahahahaha.

Anyway, the theme is "Growth and Decay." I kind of got a little carried away in the Silly Department, but I like how it came out. Very fun. You can probably look it it several times and find something new. For instance, my favorite kid. The one pushing the bubble-mower. OR Boba Fett and the sarlacc pit.

Here's the poster I created for our upcoming Super CookNight 3 event. As you can see, we decided to go with a fun Die Hard theme. I'll be making Slow-Cooked MacClane n' Cheese, if that'll give you an idea of what to expect from the menu!

Every Tuesday our CookNight crew meets. It's made of 8-or-so friends here in Lafayette that lurv them some cookin'. We take turns cooking, which allows for some tasty experiments. And we decided to share those tasty experiments with the world. Or, well, our friends in Lafayette. So instead of just one of the group cooking, we ALL cook. And we also invite guests to bring their own dishes. SCN2 was pretty crazy, and I'm sure this one will top it!

When I saw Zac Gorman tweet that he was putting together a Final Fantasy IX fan illustration zine and announced an open call for submissions, I immediately decided I'd try and submit something. And, strangely enough, the first thing that came to mind was "DRAW QUINA!" Now, I never really USED Quina in the game, but (s)he is definitely an interesting character. (S)he loves to eat. And uses that to...uh...its advantage.

Here's Quina surrounded by her meals, which consist of a good bit of the enemies in the game! I may have gone a little overboard, but I did really want to be included in the fun, haha.

Seaworthy

Next up in my "A Song of Fire and Ice" illustration series is Davos Seaworth. Davos isn't one of the flashier characters in the novels, but he has become of of my favorites. He's similar to Eddard Stark in that he's a very honest and loyal character, but has a past as a smuggler. This not-quite-legal career path led Davos to knighthood after he snuck into a besieged castle to deliver foodstuffs. Stannis Baratheon rewarded him for this venture, but took had Davos's left-hand fingers cut off at the first joint as a punishment for smuggling.

Davos kept the finger bones in a pouch around his neck to remind himself of the past and the actions that earned his family their name. Honor from dishonor, in a way.

Cosplay Sights from SDCC

Here are some of the more frequent (and usually more disturbing) cosplay sights from this year's San Diego Comic-Con. There were plenty of others, but we shan't speak of those.

Bearded Finn - There was much Adventure Time representation at the Con this year. Not all Finn cosplayers were children. And definitely not all of them were clean shaven. Slightly disturbing.

Plus-Sized Slave Leia - Look. If you're going to dress as Slave Leia, you know what you're getting into. Seriously.

Anonymous - Perhaps the easiest costume ever. That doesn't discourage many from donning it, however.

Fat Captain America - I'm not surprised that I saw several of these. I actually DID see one using his shield as a plate, too. Maybe they're trying to make a social statement.

Doctors 10 & 11 - Probably the most common costumes were from Doctor Who. There were SO MANY 10 and 11s that I lost count on the second day. The award goes to the parents that dressed their three children up as Doctors 9, 10 and 11, though!

Plus-Sized Poison Ivy - In the same realm as Slave Leia, but a little trickier because there may be green skin involved. A lot of green skin.

Old Indiana Jones - I suppose old guys think that's really their only option. Actually, a good alternative is to not dress up at all.

Nintendo Evolution

I went ahead and illustrated the evolution (and possible future) of Nintendo controllers. I don't think anyone will mind that I stuck with the main systems and left out the Virtual Boy, right?

I imagine that Nintendo will further revolutionize gameplay in that the "Wii UH" (Wii U Hyper) will encourage players to work together, literally. Since the controls would be integrated directly into the flat-screen monitor, one player would assume the left half of the controls and the other would man the right side. They could lift the TV up and move it around for the motion sensors, which would be cool because you could hook the Wii UH up to another monitor (smaller, for humor's sake) and you could see split screen stuff.

For maximum ridiculousness, you could sync up several Wii UHs together and everyone would be running around the living room in pairs holding up flat-screens. Sounds like a pretty fun time, I think.

Please do not try to find reason or logic in this illustration. Just feel your way through it. This past weekend at NOLA Comic Con, a few of the creators hung out on the Saturday night at a Drink & Draw. I was working on drawing some figure driving a dinosaur creature. I inked in the creature but left the driver out. The next day I decided to finish the illustration. Someone at the artist table behind us kept playing "Careless Whisper," which made me think of the Sexy Sax Man YouTube video. So he ended up being the dino-pilot.

Yep. And he must be piloting the dinosaur through time because there definitely weren't arrows back in the Cretaceous Period.

If you've played through Portal 2, you may get a kick out of this illustration, which is my interpretation of how our Animal King was born. This obviously takes place years and years before the game-changing "Animal King Takeover," as hypothetically offered in the game.

Here's a semi-silly illustration of a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who. If you're not familiar with the series, these are alien creatures that basically only exist when you are looking at them. And when you aren't looking at them, they sneak up on you and eat your potential energy! YUM.

To be honest, I'm not really sure how this Alan Rickman tribute came about. I had drawn Snape a couple of times before because he's such a fun character to illustrate. I then had the idea to draw four or so Rickman characters together. And that evolved into a BUNCH of them. And then I figured I could just call it a "tribute" and title it
"The Rickmen."

As you can see, I tend to get carried away when drawing random things. I was considering coloring it, so if I get enough requests via FB / Twitter / blog comments, I may end up doing that!

Dirty Coast asked me to design a poster to help raise money for the Japanese relief effort. I'm to be one of several artists designing posters to be sold to raise funds to donate. This is the concept I pursued. On the first version, I had the word "NOW" in white in the dot. It brought a little more balance, but it took away from the "Japanese flag" reference. I think I prefer this version.

I hope I'm able to help the effort somewhat with this design. It's nice to do something that actually has an effect on something other than just making people laugh a little, right?

Continuing with my Song of Fire and Ice / Game of Thrones fan art series, here's Rickon Stark and his dire wolf, Shaggydog. One of the first moments where I knew I was going to enjoy this series VERY MUCH was when all the Stark kids were naming their dire wolves, and lil' Rickon named his SHAGGYDOG. Haha, I thought that was superfun. For the most part, the novels are dark, but they do allow bits of comedic respite every now and again. This illustration is, of course, more in line with the comedic respite!

Here are Agents Fox Mulder and Dale Cooper hard at work on a case. Of coffee. Let's hope they don't let it go COLD, amirite? ANYWAY, if you've seen Twin Peaks, you know that Agent Cooper is a huge fan of a nice cup of coffee. I think that in this illustration, he's preparing himself for that initial taste. Mulder is just taking in the whole experience.

I was a big fan of the X-Files back when it ran. That episode where there was that stretchy guy that could crawl through very small spaces stayed with me for a while. As did the one where the astronauts picked up some sort of ghost alien and the dude was staring at his ceiling and it just APPEARED ON THE CEILING AND DROPPED ON HIM. WTF, MAN.

A couple of years ago I went through the first season of Twin Peaks, and it was pretty awesome. The right mix of eccentricity, creepiness and intrigue. I've started the second season, but I'm not very far into it yet. Last weekend, one of my friends requested that I draw Fox Mulder, and then we talked about Twin Peaks. So I suggested that I could draw Fox and Dale together, and that's how we got to where we are today. Looking at two agents drinking coffee. Hahaha.

Here's a pro-bono poster design that I just wrapped up. Photoshop decided that it would flatten all of my layers and then save and quit. Luckily, the design was OK'd before that happened. Phew. I will have to create a direct mail invite out of it, so I'll have to go in and fight with the flattened artwork, but I guess it won't be SUPER BRUTAL.

Anyway, I really like how it came out. EarthShare Gardens is a local community garden that is hosting an upcoming fundraiser, which the poster and soon-to-be invitations will promote. Glad to help out!

Continuing my author series, here's Ray Bradbury. Another great science fiction writer, Bradbury has put out many great works.

SPEAKING OF "putting out,' this illustration was SLIGHTLY influenced by the internet video sensation "F*** Me, Ray Bradbury," which features song and dance and ladies going crazy for the author. I assume it's a sensation. I've heard at least three people mention it, and they all live in separate parts of the country!

Anyway, funny story: I had originally drawn a Starship Troopers bug on Bradbury's shoulder. And it looked good, but then I realized that I had my author list confused and I had to draw OVER the bug. Woops. But I think this works out for the better, anyway.

There's a Robert Heinlein illustration coming up, don't you worry. And There Will Be Bugs.

Mordin & Grunt

Here are Mordin and Grunt enjoying a night off of the Normandy. When the universe is at stake, one isn't allowed much leave time. So, when the opportunity does present itself, the characters from Mass Effect 2 need to have a little fun. Or a lot of fun, depending on the character!

While illustrating this, I laughed at the idea of a buddy-cop "Mordin & Grunt" spin-off comic. They'd be the perfect match to produce hilarious results, right? And there would always be that genophage tension in the background. It'd be BRILLIANT, I say!

Ohhhhh, I can't wait until Mass Effect 3 comes outtttttt (if you can't tell).

Coffeehouse-Five

Here's my illustration of Kurt Vonnegut hard at work on his unfinished novel "Coffeehouse-Five."

Slaughterhouse-Five was my first foray into the quirky world of Vonnegut stories. I still think that my favorite of his novels is Mother Night. I remember being surprised on how much emotion it evoked. When thinking about KV's novels, I always first think of Kilgore Trout (whom I've drawn before) and then I sigh "Ohhh, Mother Night."

Always those two things, always in that order. Sometimes I'll throw in "Breakfast of Champions was SILLY!" or "I didn't like Galapagos much, but some people swear by it."

Haha, ANYWAY, I wanted to add a little quirky sci-fi element to this drawing—hence the hands. I'm thinking of doing a series of authors. Let me know if you want to suggest any!

Bishop Takes Pawn. And Creamer.

I've recently devoured the first two seasons of Fringe on DVD, and have concluded that Walter Bishop, played by the MAGNIFICENT John Noble, is one of the best characters ever created (and acted).

Good job to you sir. I toast my coffee mug to you.

For those of you not in the know, Walter Bishop was a brilliant (albeit slightly crazy) scientist who, by way of an experiment-gone-wrong, was rendered insane for 17 years. The "Fringe" division of the FBI dug him out to help investigate matters in "fringe science," an area in which Walter was well-versed.

Now, as you'd expect, it takes a little adjusting to go from a mental institution room to the wide, wide world of Boston. So Walter's son, Peter, is also brought in to "keep an eye on him."

It's great. You should be watching it, if you're not!

Firefly was, in my opinion, a superb series. I haven't checked out any of the collateral creative, such as the comics, but the television show was right up my alley. A sci-fi western? Yes, please. I figured it was time I did some Firefly fan art; since Nathan Fillion is one of my favorite actors, I thought it'd be super fun to draw him.

SO here's Captain Malcolm Reynolds making a cautious truce with ol' conniving Badger. Though Mal is a man of his word, he's also a man about his wits. Well, except when it comes to Saffron, sometimes...

Random Guitaring

Another quick installment of "Play, Burt, Play." I know, it's not drawing; don't hate me. But earlier today I was watching Fringe and messing around on guitar when I played something that reminded me a lot of the White Stripes. It's the first thing I play in this video. The rest is just improvised. I thought it turned out pretty fun,
so here it is.

My mom, if anyone, gets a kick out of these videos, hahaha. At the beginning of the vid, when I laughed, was me thinking "My mom is going to watch this a million times."

MC Snape

At Wizard World Austin 2010, I picked up the two large hardcover volumes of Invincible, an ongoing Image comic created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. I tore through those two volumes; it is pretty darned awesome.

Invincible, or Mark Grayson, has had to tackle a number of eccentric villains during the course of the series. So I figured it'd be perfectly natural for him to save the holidays from a giant, deranged mutant turducken. Right?

I thought it'd be a nice illustration on which to end 2010. Happy New Year, everyone!

I was inspired by Emmy to do my own mini-potter comic. Hopefully I'll do more! (I already have an idea for another one. It even has a JINGLE in it.)

I've typed it before and I'll type it again: Snape is by far my favorite HP character. Followed by Hermoine, the only student who could actually do any spells above a third-year level.

Cher Gambit

After years of hearing people butcher the Cajun-French word "cher," amongst other expressions and phrases, Gambit finally snaps. Actually, the biggest offender is Gambit himself, circa the X-Men cartoon. Oh, "mon CHER," it'll be alright.

Actually, it's pretty entertaining to hear "Cajun" voice acting on television. Trust me, you don't really want genuine cajunspeak on there. But, since Gambit was one charming "Cajun" mutant, I'm perfectly fine with his vaguely-kinda-frenchish-drawl. It's much easier on the ears than hearing something like "Mais, dat mutin' dere is trowin' dem playin' cards fass fass, ya cher!"

Wizard Watching

Sitting behind a table at Wizard World Austin ComicCon this past weekend allowed me the chance to do a little bit of people-watching. I tried to pick some of the more interesting characters who walked by the table. It usually helped if they stopped nearby to talk to someone, haha.

There's another one coming up in January in New Orleans. Maybe I'll get my own table and do silly commissions. Like Superman getting speared by a Superbull. Oh wait, I already drew that...

Blade PUNner

Yesterday afternoon, one of the Drawed Goods crew challenged me to do a Blade Runner illustration. So I did three. Of Leon Kowalksi.

When I asked myself "Which character from Blade Runner should I draw?" this guy immediately sprung up to the top of the list. I always thought of him as the quintessential "galoot." Look at that face!

Anyway, pne of the drawings is up on Drawed Goods, and features Leon (pictured above) in like at fast food chain McDeckard's. The second was drawn on the back of a receipt and left in a local pizzeria. I have a pic of it. And the third is, of course, posted above. Leon was never a replicant of many words.

OH, so tonight I finally finished watching Battlestar Gallactica. I loved everything (well, except the last five minutes) so much. SO SO MUCH. And I just found out that Edward James Olmos was the origami guy in Blade Runner! COINCIDENCE?

Puppet Master of Ceremonies

I was commissioned to design a shirt for the release of New Orleans puppet singer/songwriter Lil' Doogie's new album, "YeahBrahCaDaBrah." The cd release party is at the NOLA House of Blues on Nov. 5.

Pretty fun rush project. Originally I had hand-drawn some smokey magical type, but the client thought it needed to look less scripty. So, this was the reworked version.

Three colors on a blue shirt. Fun use of halftones, which is something I'd like to experiment more with.

Yes, a puppet show at the House of Blues! I wish Slayer would open for him. That'd be SICK, BRAH.

A Halloween to ReMEMEber

This year marks my first attempt at carving a pumpkin. My friends organized a pumpkin-carving contest. Complete with a rambunctious Welsh Corgi. I eagerly partook in the event.

Amidst browsing the aisles of large, orange masses of various shapes, my eyes set upon this particular pumpkin. Instantly, I new what I'd carve. And it came out surprisingly well, I think!

For those of you who do not recognize the image, and are scratching your befuddled heads, please google "LOL WUT pear." Then all shall be revealed. Partially.

Since I illustrated/designed the posters and tickets for the UL Lafayette Beaux Arts Ball, I was able to get a free pass into the event. Since it is a masquerade ball with a "recycling" theme, I went ahead and made myself a recycled newspaper mâché Batman mask. I may make a cape out of garbage bags, as well.

Should be pretty interesting, hahaha. I really hope this mask fits, as the "female model" mannequin head (the only one I could find on such short notice) does seem RATHER PETITE. Ah well, we'll see!

OK, I need to try out some of these new Copic sketch markers.

I'm going to draw this cool guy smoking. OK, he looks cool and he is smoking, check. What will be be doing? He'll be working on something. Fine. He'll be bent over his desk, hard at work.

He'll be concentrating REALLY hard on painting something. A figurine? A model car? Some sort of hand-lettered type? Maybe he should be lettering "LOL WUT?"

Nah, he's working on his new masterpiece, the representation of pure happiness.

So, I give you the man who invented the smiley face.

Note: I did not bother to research the creator of the smiley face. Don't judge me!

Beaux Arts Ball Posters

Here are two posters that I designed and illustrated (at BBR Creative) for the Beaux Arts Ball costumed fund-raising event put on by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Specifically, the College of the Arts.

The theme, as the posters state, is "Re-New, Re-Vision, Re-Cycle," and promotes making costumes out of found objects and recycled materials. I figured it would be fun to do a mirrored pair of posters, featuring decked-out recycled costume party people. I like how they have a proud air to them while being covered in repurposed materials.

The posters are actually being silk-screened and sold at the event to raise money for the College of the Arts. Woo-hoo!

RamBONKERS

Here's Rambo, wielding his gungun, which is, of course, a large gun that uses smaller guns as ammunition. Because when you're as manly as Rambo, you tend to get bored of just shooting people. You have to get creative.

Imagine that you're a guerilla terrorist dude, and you just stepped on Rambo's hamster. Come to find out, that was his FAVORITE PET. And now he's prettttty pissed. So, he whips his gungun out and fires. To avenge "MuffMuff." Once he pulls the trigger, guns are shot out at you. And THESE guns proceed to fire at you. Not only are you struck by bullets, you are also hit by the guns that fired those bullets. DUBBLE TRUBBLE.

As a sidenote, once you're as much a dude as Rambo, you can get pretty much any tattoo that you'd like. Including the Kool-Aid Man. Or puns. Because this soldier loves posing with his guns. Also, he named his gungun "Gunthrie" and carved a Woody Guthrie reference onto the side.

And YES, that IS a Sam & Max tattoo on his chest!

OMinous NOMs

I know that the "NOOOOOOOOO!" scene at the end of Revenge of the Sith was supposed to be serious, but many people I have watched the movie with burst into laughter at that moment. Maybe it was because ol' Vadey didn't usually show emotion in the original trilogy.

But what if Vader had an adorable pet Kowakian monkey-lizard that was eaten by a rancor? Would he have not had an emotional outburst? I think he might have. Or, what if

Or what if his favorite sunnydew flower garden on the Forest Moon of Endor would have been trampled by at AT-ST? You may have heard his wails all the way on Death Star II.

Or what if he would have accidentally dropped his favorite snack, beebleberry ice cream? I think that would have emotionally rivaled Padmé's death.

So think about that the next time you watch RotS. That and how Vader managed to eat ice cream through that mask.

Death Startled

It's always fun to draw things from the Star Wars universe. Always.

My mom recently commissioned me to do a drawing for one of her friends' kids. She said that "He almost likes Star Wars as much as you do!" Which is not plausible, I assure you. I mean, did HE draw a Star Wars comic with an ORLY owl cameo? DID HE? No, he most certainly did not.

But anyway, since he listed Vader as his favorite character, I drew him (which I'll post soon). As an added bonus, I thought I'd throw in the Death Star in the back ground. So I did that, too. But I also wanted to add a little humor to the drawings, so I modified them for my own purposes (mwuhahaha).

I'd like to think of the second Death Star in this way: It was a huge prank that the Rebels weren't patient enough to let be sprung. I mean, surely the Rebels were expecting another world-destroying ray, right? Imagine the LOOK on their faces when the giant "BANG" sign would have popped out! A literally huge prank, stretching a thousand or so miles. But nooooo, they had to cut it short.

Oh, man! Admiral Ackbar could have shouted "IT'S A PRANK!" That would have been great.

The Creole Trinity

With all the excitement of getting one of my shirt designs printed, I forgot to upload the art to my blog! So here it is, my first shirt printed with Dirty Coast, a t-shirt & poster printing shop in New Orleans, La.

If you aren't familiar with the cooking practices of Southern Louisiana, know that we love our cooking "trinity," which consists of onion, bell pepper and celery. They go into many a cajun/creole dish. Garlic is definitely a close runner up. I personally use garlic more than celery, haha.

Anyway, Dirty Coast asked if I'd like to do a shirt design based on "We Believe in the Trinity," and feature the onion, bell pepper and celery. So this is what I came up with. Cooking IS religious to many down here, you know.

GROSSery Shopping

The theme for this week's Sketchgroup was "Snooty Zombies," as put forth by yours truly. I was already drawing the snooty zombie when someone asked what the theme would be. That's usually how it happens, hahaha.

If you don't have one where you live, there's a fancy-pants grocery store called The Fresh Market, where the shoppers are gently caressed by classical music as they wander the aisles in a trance. The trance is mostly caused by sticker shock. Those quality ingredients are ASPENSIVE!

Don't get me wrong, I love the place. They have some AWESOME gourmet hummus. And cakes! And fresh everything, as their name displays. So I figure if there was an undead grocery industry out there, this place would attract the mid-to-upper class zombies. Right?

It would also attract packs of wild, masterless dogs.

Another random creation from our Drink & Draw Sketchgroup. The theme last Wednesday was "sky." The theme two nights ago was "snooty zombies," which I proposed. I just scanned that drawing, so you should be seeing it up here soon!

Also, I bet this pirate won't be putting his bootypack so close to his parachutes next time. IF THERE IS A NEXT TIME! I mean, he may land on a haystack, a fun-jump or a kraken, for all we know.

Save the Gulf Walrus

This is the second shirt design I've done for Dirty Coast, out of New Orleans. The creative director, Blake, contacted me with the idea "Save the Gulf Walrus," and this is what I popped out of my head. Quite a fun piece to illustrate!

If you aren't familiar with the story, apparently some oil companies released a report right after the Gulf oil leak that stated that the walrus was among the species in danger from the disaster. Well, since there aren't any walruses (walri?) in the Gulf, I guess those companies have some oily egg on their collective face.

Isn't that chubby gryphon adorable? I think he's part weenie dog. Yay, Weenie Gryphon!

The initial response was that they really liked how the art looks. I'll keep you guys posted as to if/when it gets printed.
